Engage 2009 - Stories
This summer Wycliffe had 3 Engage teams overseas seeing Bible translation first hand, engaging with the local community, and helping with translation projects and other church work. See story and photo links below...
Burkina Faso 2009 - 1-29 July [7 people]
- "Everything we did was fantastic, and for me it was a wonderful introduction to Burkina Faso and Africa. Meeting so many different people - children, students, Pastors and Christian families, translators, even people in the marketplace - was amazing..." Read Jayne's whole article
- Team leaders Mark and Laura have written about their experience on their website: "We were delighted when the San translators told us of the joy that they had knowing that a team had come from thousands of miles away." Read their whole article and watch a video they made
You can also visit Twitter to see all the team's updates during their trip.
Cambodia 2009- 1-27 July [7 people] (in partnership with Cambodia Action)
- Patricia, a teacher from Aberdeenshire, gives us a glimpse of the team's last Sunday in Cambodia: "Praise God that whether we speak English or Khmer, whether we live in the UK or in Cambodia, we are all part of His body." Read the whole story
- "Ever eaten a fried spider? Played parachute games with prisoners? Slept in a hammock?" Find out what other adventures Eleanor had during her Cambodia trip here
- "Language and culture are inseparable..." Linguistics student Elizabeth was fascinated to learn about Bible translation in Cambodia - read what she wrote here

Cameroon - 31 July - 26 August [9 people]
- Team's host Jon Blackwell writes: "This is the final week and the team are running a further four day children's club. They have also been using the 'Sabre' based recorded scriptures around the local compounds, playing the Christmas Story." Click here to read Jon's full update
- A couple of months after coming home, Ben (a youth worker from Leeds) wrote: "Why do Engage? Because its amazing, youll laugh, youll cry and youll see God move in amazing ways. Its affected me in such a positive way and really grown my relationship with God massively!" Read more of Ben's reflections here
- "I found it difficult remembering and learning bits of the language but was touched to see the joy in the peoples faces when I spoke their language. It made me think, if this is how excited they get when I simply say hello, how are you? how much more of an impact would it have when they can hear and read the word of God in their mother tongue!" Jennifer is a student at Belfast Art College. You can see some of the beautiful pictures she took during her trip to Cameroon on her blog
You can also see the team's Twitter updates during their trip.
Previous Years...
Take a look at quotes and photos from the 2008 teams to Mali and Cameroon.
"Bible translation is a long process, and is frustrating at times, but I understand now that it's more than words on a page... You can't translate Jesus with just words; you have to translate Jesus with your whole life."
- Charis George, co-leader Mali Team 2008. Read Charis' full article here.
