MA in Field Linguistics
Be trained to work in minority languages
The European Training Programme's 3-year MA programme will give you training and experience in working with minority languages, while at the same time allowing you to make a significant contribution to a translation project overseas.
The course is divided into four main parts:
- Initial training (Postgraduate Certificate) You will receive four months of training at the European Training Programme to equip you to serve as a field linguist overseas. This training will be alongside other Wycliffe workers from all over Europe who are also preparing to work in language projects.
- Field internship While not officially part of the MA, the 2-year field internship is an opportunity for you to have significant linguistic input into a translation project, while at the same time collecting data for your MA dissertation. Wycliffe UK would work with you to find a suitable internship in an area of the world that you are interested in.
- Further training (Postgraduate Diploma) After completing the field internship you would return to the UK to continue with four months of further training in discourse and translation, drawing on your experience overseas.
- Masters Dissertation Finally, you will use the data collected overseas to write a 15,000-word disseration as the culmination of the MA programme.
The initial training and field internship are the same as for those training to work overseas in Language Projects, while the further training is very relevant to continued overseas service. As such the MA in Field Linguistics very much complements the existing options for linguistic work overseas, in GRIP or longer-term Language Projects.
There is no expectation of continued service with Wycliffe on completion of the MA, although the experience will certainly be invaluable if that is your intention.
