The one who has had a hand put upon him
When a translation team were trying to translate “Christ”, they discovered that when the people group wanted to set aside someone for a position, a leader would come and point at the person, putting his hand on him.
The expression, “The one who has had a hand put upon him” was then suggested as a meaning for Christ.
However, in that language, this phrase wasn’t quite enough. It was also necessary to say who put his hand upon the man and when this took place.
So Matthew 16: 16 was eventually translated, “You are the One who from a long time before has had a hand put on him, the Son of the staying-alive God”.
