Untying the knots
The Folopa people live in a remote and rugged corner of the Southern Highlands in Papua New Guinea. Recently they celebrated receiving the New Testament in the language they understood best: their own.
As part of the dedication there were dramas, dancing,
speeches and singing. Over 700 people came from other
Folopa villages, some a 3-day walk away (there are over
3000 Folopa speakers).
One of the dramas in the dedication had a package hanging high up out of reach and the people brought it down and tried to open it, but had difficulty with the knots and then they had to unwrap another layer until they got to the New Testament in the middle. They were illustrating the difficulties of understanding the meaning of the Bible in
languages other than Folopa.
The dedication day itself is not that important, what really matters is what happens afterwards.....
