Mary's Perfume

Scripture Passage: John 12:3-8

The fragrant oil that Mary used was very costly and her act of devotion was also costly. It showed her humility because it was the servant's job to attend to the feet. Judas, who was the treasurer, was not happy about using the expensive oil this way. The oil was used by brides for their weddings, or for burials. It could have been sold so there would be more money to give to the poor. Jesus said they should not criticise Mary. He was about to die and she had anointed Him for burial ahead of time. They would always have poor people who would need money, but He would not be with them much longer since He was going to be hung on a cross to die and then He would return to Heaven. Is our life full of devotion to the Lord? Is it sometimes even costly to be His disciples?

Questions:
1. What had Mary in her box/jar?
Costly perfumed oil.
2. What did she do with this expensive oil?
She poured it over Jesus' feet.
3. Why did Judas think that Mary was wasting the oil?
Because it could have been sold and the money given to the poor.

Memory verse: 1 Timothy 6:10
For the love of money is at the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows. (NLT)
