Where I am
I'm now based back in the UK, living in Princes Risborough. From June 1985 until August 2008 I was based in Burkina Faso (West Africa).
What I do
Imagine for a moment that you are a translator somewhere in West or Central Africa. You haven't had tremendous educational opportunities, but you know some French. You are now faced with the task of translating Genesis. Would a manual that tackles the issues in the text but is presented in reasonably simple French, and in an accessible way, be helpful?
My main job is as part of a team working on a series of helps for translators in French, aimed at those with a lower level of formal education. I've specialised in Old Testament, and Genesis, Ruth, Jonah and Esther are all at various stages, with Ruth the most advanced.
So what keeps me plugging away? God's love and grace, wonderful colleagues, the fact that there's a tremendous need for more resources in French which help translators dig into the text and understand it, and the thought of individuals I know who would benefit from such materials.
From time to time I still do some Old Testament checking with teams as a translation consultant.
