Take The Next Step!

Monday, March 13th, 2017 by Camilla

The Next Step is an exciting three-day event where you’re invited to explore how you could be involved in bringing God’s word to people groups who are still waiting to hear God speak their language.

Close up of two feet walking into the distanceYou might be surprised at how varied the roles in Wycliffe Bible Translators are – they are not all language related, and they’re not all overseas! Come along to find out more about opportunities, hear stories from people already involved in what God is doing through Wycliffe, and learn about what it takes to really make the Bible available to a people group.

This time, The Next Step will take place at St Andrew’s Church in Cheadle Hulme (near Manchester), on 21-23 April. Because we want as many people as possible to attend, the event is free of charge (you just need to arrange for somewhere to stay, and sort out your own food).

The Next Step towards our goals

Thursday, April 28th, 2016 by Jo Johnson

If you regularly read ‘Standing in the Gap’ blog posts you will have spotted our series of posts on our strategic goals. Because our desire is that everyone has access to God’s word as soon as possible, one of those goals is to give the church the option to send out more workers.

This weekend, 28th – 30th April we are holding an event called The Next Step. It is designed for people

‘who are interested in being part of God’s mission by making the Bible available in everyone’s heart language, but don’t know how they could be involved. We will explore both language related options and non-language support roles at home and overseas. Such roles might include IT support, teaching or project management roles as well as joining the team that are part of the Bible translation movement through literacy, language survey, Scripture impact and linguistics.’

Those who are considering joining Wycliffe Bible Translators, and their churches, find that this is a key event in the process of engaging with Wycliffe. We long for God to give us the people and resources that we need to reach our goal of enabling all people to be able to access and be impacted by Scripture in their heart language. We believe that The Next Step is a stepping stone towards achieving that goal. Please pray with us:

  • Praise God that we have significantly more people attending than last year.
  • Pray for protection over each person involved whether attending or leading.
  • Ask God to speak clearly into the lives of each person who will be there, as they consider how God might be leading them in the future.
  • Pray for unity for the team facilitating the weekend and that each team member interacts well with the participants.

How should I get involved?

Friday, May 29th, 2015 by Jo Johnson

The Next Step, a weekend event exploring how you could be involved in bringing God’s word to those without it, starts today in Manchester and runs until Sunday afternoon.

This is a key opportunity for those who are asking these questions:

‘Is Wycliffe a good fit for me?’ and ‘Is now the time to step up to the plate?’

Each person attending is in a different place in their journey to find answers to these questions. For some this will be a key moment to hear from God.

Please pray for:

  • The six team members who will be sharing their stories about how God has used them in Wycliffe. Ask God to give them wisdom in what to share and sensitivity to God’s Holy Spirit as they seek to answer questions and give guidance.
  • The nine participants, some attending for the whole time and some for just part. Ask God to speak into their lives and move them forward in their understanding of his plans for their lives. Pray that they will benefit from time spent at the event and see clearly what the next step is for them.
  • For everyone involved pray for good health, energy and safe travel.

Don’t worry if you’re interested in finding out how you could get involved but have missed the opportunity to go along to the Next Step. The Two Week Stint  held in the south of France would answer many of your questions.  Alternatively, you could go along to ‘First Steps‘ events which will be held around country through the winter.

The Next Step: 31 October – 2 November

Monday, September 22nd, 2014 by Ruth

At the end of October Wycliffe offers a fantastic opportunity to spend some quality time with others considering your next steps in God’s mission.  ‘Where could I fit?’  ‘What might God be leading me to next?’

TThe Next Stephe Next Step is a residential weekend designed for people who are interested in being part of God’s mission by making the Bible available in everyone’s heart language, but don’t know how they could be involved. We explore both language related options for service and non-language support roles at home and overseas. Such roles might include IT support, teaching opportunities or project management roles as well as joining the team that is part of the Bible translation movement through literacy, language survey, Scripture impact and linguistics.

We also explore in some depth what is needed to make Bible translations clear, natural, accurate and acceptable to local language communities.

A previous participant says,

“I can’t tell you how important the weekend has been to me, and how it gave an impulse in finding out what our God has in mind for me and my wife and sons.”

The Next Step: how it went

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2014 by Hannah

At the end of March, nine participants, eight from the UK and one from the Netherlands, travelled to Oxford for The Next Step weekend, a chance to explore how they could fit into God’s work in Bible translation. It was a great weekend and, as you’ll see, helpful for everyone who came…

Jetro from the Netherlands wrote,

I can’t tell you how important the weekend has been to me, and how it gave an impulse in finding out what our God has in mind for me and my wife and sons.

Helen, a UK participant, wrote,

Thank you again for the wonderful weekend, and for your email. I am due to talk at my church’s leadership team meeting this Thursday about the weekend and my application, and possible church visit. I will also check with work about the Two Week Stint in France. I think that it would be helpful for me to go.

Stewart Johnson, director of the Wycliffe church engagement team, says:

The Next Step weekend was successful in answering the question: is Wycliffe and the Bible translation movement the right fit for me? God spoke to all nine participants. Four have decided to begin the application process immediately. One couple is looking into a short-term assignment with Wycliffe soon. In fact of the nine participants, no one went away saying, ‘Wycliffe is not for me’!

The weekend was a huge success largely because of God’s presence. It was also due to the hard work of the team there for the whole weekend and for the guest speakers who came in for large parts of the weekend.

The Next Step: 3 – 6 September

Friday, July 27th, 2012 by Hannah

Do you get excited when you hear about people’s lives being changed when they read the Bible in their own language?

Do you ever wonder if you could be part of it?

Are you still trying to work out where you might fit in?

The Next Step, Wycliffe’s newest event for enquirers, could be just the thing for you. The debut event is coming up in just over a month.

Building on the excellent and in-depth exploring of the Window on Wycliffe course, The Next Step is custom-built for your enquiry. It runs over four days at The Wycliffe Centre, near High Wycombe.

The event will cover:

  • worship and Bible times to dig deeper into God’s plans and work;
  • exploring what it takes to make a Bible translation happen;
  • exploring roles within the Bible translation movement that get Scriptures off shelves and into the hearts of people from minority language communities;
  • working out how your gifts and mission can fit into and serve your church;
  • working out which role would suit your skills and expertise;
  • cafe-style question times to release your inner control freak and ask all those niggling questions on a one-on-one basis;
  • great food, great company;
  • and much, much more!

The debut session will run between 3rd and 6th September. For more information, go to wycliffe.org.uk/thenextstep (you can find out about how to register there too).
